Christopher Martin
Christopher Martin’s tennis journey began in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he developed a love for the game and established himself as one of the nation’s top junior players. His outstanding accomplishments at the state, national, and international levels laid the foundation for a remarkable collegiate career and a lasting legacy in the sport.
As a junior, Martin reached the No. 1 ranking in Oklahoma Boys’ 14-and-under singles in 1996 and finished the year ranked No. 1 nationally in both singles and doubles, partnering with future professional star Andy Roddick. That same year, he captured National Clay Court Championships in singles and doubles, won the Easter Bowl doubles title, and was a finalist at the National Hard Court Championships. He continued his success in the Boys’ 16s and 18s, earning additional national and international titles, competing in the junior Grand Slam events, and achieving a top-20 International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior ranking in both singles and doubles. He also represented the United States at the World Youth Cup.
From 2001 to 2005, Martin starred at the University of Illinois, earning four varsity letters and helping lead the Fighting Illini to four consecutive Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships. During his tenure, Illinois went undefeated in Big Ten competition, compiling an extraordinary 52–0 record. Martin was also part of two ITA National Men’s Indoor Championship teams and the historic 2003 NCAA Division I National Championship squad.
Martin delivered one of the defining moments of his career by clinching the deciding point in Illinois’ 2003 NCAA championship victory over Vanderbilt. His collegiate honors included selection to the 2003 NCAA All-Tournament Team, the 2003 ITA Summer National Championships in both singles and doubles, the 2002 ITA Summer Circuit Player of the Year award, and the 2003 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. In 2005, he received the Fighting Illini Spirit Award, which was subsequently named in his honor in perpetuity.
Throughout his career, Martin recorded impressive victories over accomplished players, including Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and Bobby Reynolds, as well as doubles wins over John Isner and Guillermo Coria.
From his early days on the courts of Tulsa to the pinnacle of collegiate tennis, Christopher Martin has demonstrated exceptional talent, determination, sportsmanship, and team spirit. His achievements at every level of the game make him a worthy inductee into the Oklahoma Tennis Hall of Fame and an enduring source of pride for his home state.
